Question: Can you name at least 2 of Santa’s reindeer?
We are delighted to tell you that so far our fundraising for CLIC Sargent has raised an incredible £970.79!
As you may know, the lives of children and young people are dramatically changed by a cancer diagnosis and the effects of treatment. This normally starts immediately, is often given many miles from home and can last for up to three years.
The emotional, practical and financial implications of treatment are intensely challenging for the whole family and normal, everyday life is turned upside down. Please see Quinn’s story below.
Your support will help CLIC Sargent make a difference to the life of a child who has cancer and their family. As an example, our donation could pay for a CLIC Sargent Social Worker for a week. You can donate via our just giving page here http://www.justgiving.com/TrulyMadlyBaby-TrulyMadlyKid
CLIC Sargent helped Quinn’s family from the very beginning. Here, Quinn’s mother, Sara, tells their story.
I honestly thought I was going to lose my little boy that Christmas. All I could do was sit, and hope.
As you can imagine, my husband Geoff and I were in total shock. Christine, our CLIC Sargent Social Worker, helped us find some calm in our emotional chaos. From then on, CLIC Sargent became our lifeline.
This was our first Christmas with cancer. Quinn wasn’t well at all. Halfway through Christmas Day we rushed him to hospital. Quinn couldn’t stop crying as we drove the long 50 miles through the snow to Queen’s Hospital in Nottingham.
It broke my heart to leave him there, as I went home to look after our family.
Thankfully, Geoff was able to stay at one of CLIC Sargent’s Homes from Home – the wonderful Billy’s House in Nottingham – where families like ours can stay just a few minutes from the hospital. Through Quinn’s 31 months of treatment, we simply wouldn’t have managed without Billy’s House. It meant we always had somewhere to go.
We were determined to escape the daily stress of living with cancer by holidaying in Scotland. But our celebrations were cut short when Quinn got sick. We rushed him to hospital in Glasgow, where they put him in isolation and started running test after test. I honestly thought I was going to lose my little boy that Christmas. All I could do was sit, and hope.
We no longer had the energy to make Christmas happen. All our hopes were pinned on spending the holiday at CLIC Sargent’s Malcolm Sargent House in Scotland. Then Quinn got sick again.
We hadn’t bought a tree. We’d only just managed to organise presents. So when Quinn was hospitalised, we were devastated. If we couldn’t go to Malcolm Sargent House – CLIC Sargent’s holiday home dedicated to families coping with cancer – then Christmas would effectively be cancelled.
We spoke to the doctors at the hospital and explained our plans. The doctors knew that in CLIC Sargent’s care, Quinn would have access to any medical attention he might need nearby and so they agreed to let us go.
Without CLIC Sargent, Christmas simply wouldn’t have happened that year.
It’s going to be chaos – and I can’t wait. It will be our second Christmas free from cancer and I know it will be wonderful.
But as we celebrate, I know there will be families struggling through Christmas as they care for a child with cancer. Currently CLIC Sargent can only support two out of three children and young people with cancer, and their families. It’s a shocking statistic, and your gift today will make such an important difference to a child like Quinn.
